We have been making Japanese custom made lanterns with hand painted patterns and designs using Edo era letters and characters, and family crests. We have many kinds of lanterns. We are waiting for your visit.  << What is a Chochin?? >> Bamboo ribs or metal wires formed into a spiral shape are used as the frames of Japanese traditional paper Chochin-lanterns. Japanese paper covers the frames. By putting a lighted candle inside, a Chochin-lantern can be used for lighting illumination. They come in many different shapes, round, egg shape, and column shape. Often with special designs, letters, characters or family crests, they are now used for self expression. << The history of Chochin. >> "Edo's illuminated ID." In Edo era, people often carried Japanese Chochin-lanterns to light their way at night. Different sizes and styles reflected rank and status, and some lanterns were marked with a family crest or family name. Ordinary people carried theirs on poles, horseback warriors carried a kind that stayed alight even when shaken, and the ones used by firefighters and security guards could also be folded away. |
